ABOUT The FESTIVAL

What is Alternativa Film Festival

We are a nomadic festival focused on impact cinema from the Global South. We honor films that bring positive change to the world and society.

With each edition, the festival moves to a new focus region. After unforgettable stops in Almaty (Central Asia) and Yogyakarta (Southeast Asia), Alternativa Film Festival continues its journey—bringing the spotlight to Latin America and taking place in Medellín, Colombia.

At Alternativa, we firmly believe that art — especially cinema — has the power to transform the way we see the world and relate to one another. It can inspire empathy, spark dialogue, and encourage us to build a more inclusive and just society. That is why we are excited and deeply honored to bring the Alternativa Film Festival to Medellín, a city that stands as a remarkable example of transformation through art, creativity, and community-building.

We invite you to join us at the festival to get inspired, broaden your horizons, discover new perspectives, forge new connections, and take part in a vibrant dialogue across continents — a dialogue that reminds us that, despite the different cultures we come from, we share common challenges, dreams, and hopes for a better world.

Films that travel. Stories that transform

With the 3rd Alternativa Film Festival, we present films that tell urgent, socially engaged stories from across Latin America and Asia.

From powerful dramas and gripping documentaries to comedies and family-friendly titles—these are films that invite reflection, solidarity, and action. All screenings are followed by conversations with filmmakers—connecting stories to local realities.

It’s an honour to serve as Features Jury President for the Alternativa Film Festival this year. I’ve long admired the festival’s vital work in amplifying underrepresented voices from across the globe, and the collaboration they foster within the film industry and across cultures. This year’s Feature Competition showcases some of the most exciting new voices from Latin America and Asia, and I’m thrilled to be working with the festival to bring this lineup of stories to a global stage. As an actress and producer, I deeply resonate with Alternativa’s mission, and I feel truly inspired to be part of stories that carry a purpose and contribute to meaningful change.

Free and inclusive

All festival screenings, discussions, panels, and other public and professional events are free—reflecting Alternativa’s mission to bring impactful films to broad and diverse audiences while empowering film industry professionals and social change leaders from the Global South.
