Alternativa has officially revealed the Selection Committee for the Alternativa Film Festival 2026 — a diverse group of curators, programmers, and impact experts from Latin America, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and beyond. They will be responsible for choosing the films featured in the Festival’s Competition Program. The announcement was made during Alternativa’s [official debut in Colombia] during a panel at the Bogotá Audiovisual Market (BAM).

The open call for Alternativa Film Festival 2026 was officially launched earlier at the Guadalajara International Film Festival. Submissions are free and open until October 10, 2025. Feature-length films of all genres are accepted from Latin America and Asia, while short films are accepted exclusively from Latin America. More details about the festival — including the host city, dates, and International Jury — will be announced soon.

Natalia Pylaeva (Alternativa)

In 2026, the Alternativa Film Festival will serve as a meeting point for impactful films from Asia and Latin America. We’re proud to welcome new committee members with deep knowledge of and love for Latin American cinema — from Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Cuba, and more.

Meet all the members of the Selection Committee  and learn more about them on the Selection Committee page of our website. We asked a few of them to share their reflections and expectations for the upcoming Festival – read their answers below.

Jaime E. Manrique, Selection Committee Member

I deeply believe that cinema is capable of changing the world and transforming societies, it is a very powerful tool with the responsibility to do more than just entertain; that is why being part of the Selection Committee of Alternativa, besides being an honor, is above all a wonderful opportunity to get closer to Latin American short stories that can change reality and it will be a pleasure to share them with the public.

Adrian Jonathan Pasaribu, Selection Committee Member

Cinema grows and breathes with diversity. This is what I expect for the next edition of the Alternativa Film Festival: more stories from the less travelled paths, more identities from the less talked regions, more communities from the less imagined worlds. Moreover, I expect Alternativa to stand ever closer and deeper with the grassroots.

Gulnara Abikeyeva, Selection Committee Member

The Alternativa  Film Festival focuses on social cinema — films that strive to make the world a better place. I consider it an honor to be part of the Selection Committee and help bring the most meaningful works to light. Asia and Latin America — despite the great distance and differences between them — seem to share something in common: magical realism, one of the tools for creating cinematic language. I think we will soon see whether this tool still works or if it has been replaced by something more contemporary.
