The Alternativa Film Festival is an alternative system for recognizing talents from upcoming film industries and artistic communities. We honor and celebrate both the artistic merits and potential social impact of cinema, the films capable of driving change while captivating diverse audiences. Festival winners will be chosen by an International Jury consisting of film directors and producers, as well as community leaders and NGO representatives, and will receive monetary prizes.
The move to Latin America follows the successful two editions of the Alternativa Festival in 2023, which were held in Kazakhstan, and in 2024, – in Indonesia. The upcoming third edition will expand its focus to the Latin American market, furthering the project's mission to spotlight unique voices in Global South cinema.
In 2023, the Alternativa supported a number of filmmakers, with 350 submissions received across 25 countries for the Awards strand. Last year, we received 680 submissions from 33 countries. This year, Alternativa’s open call will be open to filmmakers from all Asian countries and Latin America.
The Festival, showcasing all nominated titles, was launched last year and successfully took place in Indonesia, drawing over 2,300 attendees. It runs during the week leading up to the November awards ceremony and reflects the growth of Alternativa’s initiative. This expansion builds on Alternativa’s nomadic spirit, aiming to reach more regions and offer stronger support to filmmakers with each new edition.
