About the panel
Case study of Kenya — a documentary that tells the real-life story of Kenya Cuevas, a trans woman who survived an attempted transfemicide and later became a leading activist. Beyond its cinematic value, Kenya functions as a tool for visibility, memory, and social change, and has been widely used in educational, activist, and human rights contexts. The project participated in DocuLab, FICG’s work-in-progress program for documentaries in post-production, under the working title Ventura.
Kenya has screened at numerous national and international festivals, including FICG in 2024, where it won Best Director (Gisela Delgadillo), the Audience Award, Best LGBTQ+ Film, and an Honorable Mention for Best Mexican Film. While its success is measured not only in awards but in its social reach and real-world impact, Kenya exemplifies how cinema can contribute to public dialogue and social transformation.
