Over the past few years, we’ve had the privilege of discovering and supporting extraordinary filmmakers through Alternativa Film Festival and our Film Labs. Time and again, we’ve seen powerful stories resonate with festival audiences but struggle to secure international circulation.

That’s why we’re launching Alternativa Distribution—a new non-profit, non-theatrical distribution label supported by inDrive, dedicated to helping impactful films from the Global South reach audiences around the world to shift perspectives and inspire change. Focusing on linear and non-linear distribution, Alternativa Distribution will work with streaming platforms, public and pay-TV broadcasters, in-flight entertainment providers, and educational institutions across Latin America, MENA, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, while also bringing these films to audiences in Europe, North America and Oceania.

In line with inDrive’s mission to empower fair choices and challenge injustice, Alternativa was founded on the belief that storytelling can be a catalyst for meaningful social change, with a mission of championing underrepresented filmmakers whose work has the potential to bring a positive impact. Through our nomadic festival, filmmaker training programmes and strategic partnerships, we connect cultures, empower local communities, and help facilitate social transformation. With the launch of Alternativa’s Distribution, we are taking this a step further – and by supporting a distribution model centered on impactful narratives and a fair approach, we aim to bring vital films to wider audiences while helping to shift cultural norms, attitudes and beliefs at scale.

Alternativa Distribution is built on a fair, non-profit model that puts filmmakers first. Rights holders receive a fair upfront Minimum Guarantee, followed by revenue sharing from licensing deals. Instead of maximizing profit, the labes reinvests its income into supporting filmmakers, expanding our catalogue, and making acclaimed festival films available at accessible license fees. Alternativa Distribution also fully funds localisation—including translation, subtitling and dubbing—provide local marketing support, and measure each film's impact through audience research, media monitoring, social listening and interviews.

The inaugural catalogue includes 10 scripted and documentary features, including A Poet (dir. Simón Mesa Soto), winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes, and three winners of the Alternativa Film Festival: 9-Month Contract (dir. Ketevan Vashagashvili), Bird of a Different Feather (dir. Manohara K), and Grand Me (dir. Atiye Zare Arandi).

"Our selection is based not only on artistic excellence and impact, but also on the films’ accessibility potential. We will take films that resonate on the emotional side and make people feel empathy, hope and sorrow and all these things that could ultimately manage to create some sort of cognitive change." — said Avital Lavi, Head of Alternativa Distribution, in an interview with Deadline.
