In September, we joined the Just Futures Impact Story Lab in Bali — a new initiative for storytellers from across Southeast Asia. Organized by In-Docs, Doc Society and Alternativa, the Lab brought together creators of audiovisual projects that address urgent regional issues and drive meaningful impact.

The week was dedicated to reclaiming narratives, building solidarity, and shaping collective strategies for change. Against the backdrop of shifting political and cultural landscapes in the region, the Lab offered a much-needed space for storymakers to connect, exchange knowledge, and amplify one another’s voices. Through a series of brainstorming sessions, presentations, and talks, participants reflected on their roles as storytellers and built lasting alliances across borders.

Just Futures Impact Story Lab Manifesto

When criticism gets shut down, stories and lores will break through the systemic oppression. This cohort is a space for hearing, learning, and solidarity—where we recognise that our struggles are not isolated, but interwoven. It starts with your story. Let's rewrite the future.

Our impact distribution manager Masha Shcherbakova represented Alternativа at the Lab, taking part in two key events:

  • Shaping Just Futures #2: Locating ourselves as impact storytellers — a brainstorming session led by Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala (FilDocs and our own Impact Distribution Lab tutor) and Hollie Fifer (Doc Society),
  • Road to Just Futures: Next Steps — a closing session with Hollie Fifer, local producers and researchers, focused on developing concrete follow-up actions and collaborations.

The real magic of the Lab was in three things:
 • Being surrounded by bold, creative changemakers who inspire you not only to master your craft but also to live guided by values and an inner compass.
 • Eight incredible projects and teams — not only films, but also multimedia and hybrid formats. A powerful reminder that impact can come from any form of art, not just cinema.
 • Community. Finding ‘your people,’ a place where you truly feel at home, is priceless. It reminded me why we all keep ‘churning the butter like that little mouse’ — because sometimes it brings us exactly where we’re meant to be.

We’re incredibly thankful to have been part of this inspiring week — for the stories shared, the ideas exchanged, and the sense of community that grew with every conversation. At Alternativa, we look forward to deepening our connections with Southeast Asian storytellers and impact leaders, and to keeping knowledge and inspiration flowing across regions.
