Free public events that showcase nominees and winners of the Alternativa Film Awards & Festival, blending screenings with impact discussions and online features to raise awareness, spark dialogue, and drive social change.
In fall 2024, we launched the impact distribution of Mirlan Abdykalykov’s Bride Kidnapping, winner of the Alternativa Spotlight Award 2023. This heart-wrenching drama, based on real events, addresses the widespread yet often overlooked issue of bride kidnapping in Central Asia. Our initiative, targeted for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, aimed to foster public dialogue, equip victims with practical tools, and create safe spaces for sharing traumatic experiences.
Free screenings were held in cinemas across major cities in Kazakhstan, with additional screenings organized at universities and community events. Each screening was followed by discussions involving policymakers, activists, and experts. Collaborating with local NGOs and grassroots changemakers, we merged cinema with direct support and action.
